baby names and a pet peeve

Let’s do the pet peeve first, so we can move on to the fun stuff. It really gets on my nerves when people who are not really my friends call or email me with questions about their pets. I really truly don’t mind when my actual friends ask me questions…but if you’ve never called me before for social purposes, and really have no intentions of doing so, it irks me. It feels like I’m being used…even though 9 times out of 10 my response is going to be to take them to a vet. But I also don’t feel like I can not respond, or say that I’m really uncomfortable offerring advice like that, because I think that God would probably want me to help anyone whenever I can. I just don’t get it – I don’t ask acquaintances who are doctors, nurses, pharmacists, whatever for medical advice. Anyhow, its been happening a lot lately, as if now that I’ve started back to work it means its open season all the time for pet advice.

On to the fun stuff…we do not have a referral, we aren’t even close to having a referral, but when/if we do get a referral, wouldn’t it be nice to have a name ready?

Hunky is not a lot of help in this department – he is a fan of one name, and one name only, and we will not be using that name for this child, just as we didn’t use it for our boys. The name is fine, I just don’t want to use it for my children, and it doesn’t match our kids’ names.

So here’s what I like: Lincoln, Emmett, Atticus, Sheppard, Campbell, Oliver.

Here’s what I’d like in a name: one that flows with O’s and Y’s name; one that doesn’t sound dumb with our last name (which starts with an H, has one syllable, and can be problematic with some names, like my husband’s); ideally one that doesn’t have the same first letter as any of our names; one that doesn’t end like our names; one that isn’t really popular

So lets break each choice down:

  • Lincoln: pros: unusual but not weird (224 on social security baby name website), doesn’t end like any of our names, goes well with the boys’ names and our last name; cons: starts with L, like my name
  • Emmett: pros: unusual but not weird (576 on list), doesn’t end like any of our names, goes well with the boys’ names and our last name’ cons: I’ve heard this one is gaining in popularity, but this is probably at the top of my list right now
  • Atticus: pros: unusual (683), goes well with Y’s name, which is also after a literary figure, goes well with last name; cons: maybe too unusual?? maybe a little too unusual for O’s name, which is in the top 20 on the list
  • Sheppard: pros: unless there’s an alternate spelling I can’t think of, is not in the top 1000 on the list, but its not a weird name, it goes well with our family names; cons: this one isnt’ in my top slot anymore because its hard for me to imagine calling a baby that will probably be of a smaller stature than my sons “Shep”, which connotates a big strapping fellow (or a dog, according to several friends) – it also starts with the same letter as Y’s name, although the sh makes it sound different
  • Campbell: pros: unusual, but not weird (739), goes well all around with our family’s name; cons: none that I can think of – its up there in the top 2 with Emmett
  • Oliver: unusual but not weird (140), goes well with family names, the literary aspect is good but not quite as obvious as Atticus; cons: ends like Y’s name

So for now, Emmett, Campbell, Oliver, and Atticus top my list. Hunky will probably not like any of these, but he didn’t like Y’s name until we decided to use it. He basically needs to be worn down to accept any given name I love 🙂

Sooo…what’s your favorite? What do you hate? If you have any other great literary names, let me know. If you know my kid’s names, which will go best with them? Isn’t Emmett the cutest name ever – it makes me think of Emmet Otter’s Junk Band Christmas!

Jeez, this exercise sure would be easier if I’d just tell you everyone’s names, right?

Oh, and for middle names, we’ll probably use 2 – his Vietnamese name and a family name. I hate to saddle a kid with 4 names, but I don’t want to not use his Vietnamese name – what if he wanted to use it later? And I feel like it would be wrong to not use a family name as well, because both of our boys have family names for middle names. The middle name will either be Robert, John or Riggan.

Edited to add: I am such an idiot. I know that the name of the movie is Emmet Otter’s JUG band Christmas, but growing up I always thought it was JUNK band, and that’s what flowed off the fingers today. Stupid ren.

  1. “Pet” peeve…for you, the phrase takes on new meaning!

Oh, Atticus — one of my favorite literary characters of all time. What good connotations — caring, brave, smart, fair, determined, willing to name his daughter Scout…all good.

But, really, I love them all. Emmett and Campbell might be my second favorites.

I guess I should play it all cool and be like, oh PET peeve, was wondering if y’all would pick up on that. Not so much 🙂

  3. I like Emmett best, but that is because it is the name of one of the Twilight characters and I haven’t yet gotten over my obsession with that book series.

    i don’t know your kid’s names, so i can’t help with that aspect…but i love oliver. so cute 🙂

let us know when you start narrowing it down!

Hrm…I really like all of those names. My least fav is Lincoln. Just seems a bit too…stately for a kid. Atticus is fantastic but hard to imagine it for a child. Sheppard and Campbell are so cool — love those as well as Oliver and Emmett. All very, very cool names. I definitely vote for Riggan as a middle name. 100%

I love Lincoln and Oliver. Emmett is my least favorite. I don’t think it flows with O and Y’s names. Actually, I really like Sheppard and Campbell too! Emmett is in last place…

Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve commented. This kid has to be held ALL THE TIME. Ugh!

  7. Ok, Ok. This name thing. Emmitt Smith is a black football player. A super famous one. The only thing that comes to mind when you say Emmett is you adopting a big giant black football player. 🙂

Mr. K hated Campbell when I was on a Campbell kick. He always said the kid would get teased about being named after soup. Also the name of Camp McCool who died driving drunk while we were in college and he was at MRA.

Oliver is my favorite. Who cares about the twist. It’s so cute. I like that it ends like Y’s name actually and don’t think it’s too out there to not go with O’s.

Lincoln was the name of a black basketball player that I went to college with. Very nice guy dated my roomate. Lincoln Jefferson Washington was his name. I don’t say that to make fun; I say it because it’s true. 🙂 We called him Linc. Not a bad name, but not my first choice on your list.

Sheppard is still my first choice. Shep is super adorable. I must be missing something because I don’t think big and strapping when I hear Shep. Is that the name of some giant guy?

Atticus is my 3rd favorite. Shep, Oliver, Atticus. Atticus is nice b/c there really isn’t a short form and since your other 2 boys really don’t have short forms, I like that. It’s easy to say, easy to spell, not too weird. But I am obviously literary illiterate b/c I have no clue what famous character you refer to. Must go look into this.

    🙂

Holly! Seriously? 🙂 To Kill A Mockingbird – Atticus was Scout’s dad. I really like Scout as a name too – but it doesn’t go with our last name.
But you bring up a good point about Emmitt Smith – I don’t do football, so he didn’t even cross my mind. The Campbell Soup aspect is something I’m sure Hunky would think of as well.
You don’t think of Shep and think of some good ole boy? We like it because of the biblical significance, but I think its also cool because Shep was the name of the dad in Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, which is an AWESOME book.

Ok, I’m picky about names, and boys are harder than girls. Let’s see…
Lincoln. It’s ok I suppose. A bit much I think, but not awful. Doesn’t really ‘go’ with your boys’ names though.
Shepperd (is that how you spelled it?). There’s pet peeve number one of mine. How do you spell it? Shepherd, Sheperd, Sheppard, etc etc etc. Not fun. And I’m in the ‘that’s a dog name’ camp.
Which brings us to Campbell. Soup, that is. No, really. I like it, but I couldn’t do it cause of the soup thing. I’d go with Caldwell instead. Similar, but no chicken soup confusion.
Atticus. Too far out there, and doesn’t go with either of your boys’ names now. That’s my least favorite.
What does that leave? Emmett. That’s our pastor’s last name. Kinda neat, cool sounding, but not too strange, though the spelling thing would be an issue. Emmett. Emmitt. Not too bad, those are the two I can think of that would be most likely.
Oliver. I’d say that one ‘matches’ your boys’ names best, but I like Emmett better. It’d probably be my second choice.
None of them are awful though, so you can’t really go wrong with whatever you choose.

  10. Hmm… To Kill a Mockingbird. Never read it. Which is surprising because in high school and college I read everything. 🙂

So what is the biblical reference for Shep? And yes I read Ya Ya and I did actually picture him as a big good ole boy. 🙂

I told Matthew about Campbell and he said, “Mmmm, Mmmm good.”

  11. lauren

Holly, you MUST read it…it is so good. The biblical relation with the name Shepherd is, you know, the Lord is our Shepherd. I guess I think of it as a semi-biblical name, in the same vein as naming your kid Christian.
Jennifer, you bring up a good point with the spelling variations – I would probably want to spell it Sheppard, but it would be confusing. Also, your blog’s being funny on the password page – it won’t let me in, but doesn’t tell me my password is wrong either. Weird.

  12. Jennifer

Hmmm…I’ve no clue what might be wrong with my blog password. I dreamt the other night that I had to change it to 2+5=7 and woke up in a cold sweat. If it’s still wonky, email me and I’ll make sure it’s the right one. Not that I blog much lately…
